Skritter: The Hard Way to Learn Characters

Skritter is a tool for learning the written Chinese characters (hanzi).  Unfortunately it relies on brute repetition, the slow and hard way to memorize anything.

The introductory screen is colorful.

And the introductory videos for each section are engaging.

Characters are arranged for learning in groups of ten.

For each character, you'll be taught 4 things: its definition, its tone, its pronunciation, and how to write it.

When learning to write the characters, it teaches the proper sequence and direction in which the strokes are made.

With the paid version there's also a contest to see which user can draw the characters the fastest.

The big lack of Skritter is a true SRS flashcard review system.  When you review a card, you mark it simply yes/no, remembered it or didn't.  Better SRS systems give you 4 options (failed, difficult, okay, easy) which allow for much more precision in knowing which cards to review.
